Plaid/Check Repeat

Most pattern designers use combinations of two or more of the repeat types shown above to create single designs. Or, they might layer a toss layout over a plaid for a more interesting and complex look. I am an artist who makes quilts both fine and fun. My fun quilts are made with the fabric that I design for FreeSpirit. Almost all of these are influenced by the natural world which surrounds me here in rural Northern Illinois. So my year is divided into segments that are punctuated by design deadlines and teaching dates.

Diamond Repeat

If you are not familiar with how to create repeat pattern designs, please watch this YouTube video for more in depth guidance. You'll need to follow trends and even better, learn to predict them. Websites like WGSN can help you keep updated with where your industry might go. This means your designs will always be fresh and ahead of the curve. Because we print on demand, your favorite designs are always in stock on exactly the fabric or wallpaper type you need. If you’d like to sell your artwork, simply hit the “Make Public” button and follow the guided steps.

Brick/half-brick repeats are used very often in fabric design. The motifs can be exclusive of each other (as shown above) or have some overlap when they are organized. An overlap can be achieved in Photoshop or Illustrator. To keep the hand-drawn or hand-painted look, I recommend using Adobe Photoshop. To draw your motifs digitally, you can use Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

Illustrator will provide a more graphic style since the program is vector-based. You’ll also need to research trends online and at brick-and-mortar retailers. I recommend starting on Pinterest and start collecting images on boards. From there, you’ll want to bookmark different blogs you follow, perhaps sign up on Bloglovin, and collect images from hot Instagram accounts. Create Your Own Design — Just upload an image to get started. Get an instant preview of your design in several different repeats.

The ogee repeat is similar to the diamond repeat in shape – but the ogee is more rounded on two sides with the other two sides coming to points. As with the diamond repeat, it can be a simple repeat of ogee shapes in a half-drop or half-brick arrangement, or it can be more complex with overlaps and combinations of smaller motifs. Talented fabric designers are excellent researchers and collect examples of interesting designs. Compiling a scrapbook of cool fabrics, unusual patterns or even eye-catching lettering is a great way to start gathering inspiration. Learn more about designing fabric patterns in the course, Create Your Own Fabric Design with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. A quick perusal of any fabric manufacturer’s portfolio will show you that pattern types are often not so clean cut.

Drop/half-drop repeats are another very common type of repeat in fabric and surface design. Print and digital designers can utilize the same tools, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, to produce dynamic patterns for fabric that will eventually turn into a beloved, tangible item. As creatives, we love working with print and patterns—and designing patterns for use in fashion and home decor fabrics offers glorious opportunity for expanding your marketable skillset and establishing a new creative hobby. Designing your own fabric is definitely the real “meat” of this whole process! This way, you can overlap them and arrange them on the art board any way you like. You can hand-draw your motifs, paint them with watercolors or other paints, sketch them, or draw them digitally.

Dot Repeat:

Apply your design to the fabric, wallpaper, or gift wrap of your choice. Read about the history of checkerboard pattern here. In this article, Judy Stewartdives into the history and the significance behind the pattern. As with the brick/half-brick, the terms drop and half-drop can be used interchangeably unless the offset isn’t 50% of the original motif. You will most often see 50% offsets, but smaller or larger ones certainly aren’t unheard of.

Behind every design is an independent artist from around the world who earns royalties on every item you purchase. His modern illustrations are inspired by biodiversity and cartography.

You can follow the progress of this quilt in the making on my blog. Shop the Marketplace — Our Marketplace includes hundreds of thousands of designs created by people all over the world. Clea & Joanna of the Emmy-nominated Netflix show have partnered with Spoonflower to curate a collection of their favorite wallpapers.

If you want to draw more conversational prints with people or animals, ask yourself if you want a traditional French fabric like Toile or if you want to depict your pattern in a casual or modern way. Create your own design–just upload an image to get started, or choose a design from the Spoonflower Marketplace. Create your own design–just upload an image to get started, or choose a design from the Spoonflower Marketplace, where indie artists earn commissions from every sale. Chances are, you'll be able to spot the one you're looking for in this mini-glossary of the most common fabric patterns.

Next, you'll need to establish a style for your fabrics. There are a range of styles consistently seen in the marketplace and one good way to think of design styles is to consider well known retailers. Restoration Hardware is more sophisticated traditional while a furniture store like Ashley Furniture may be more transitional appealing to the mass market. Fabric designers create the patterns for textiles, fabric or other soft woven surfaces. Have you ever spent time drooling over fabric patterns or patterns in clothes? Or maybe you have searched and searched for the perfect fabric design, but you just couldn’t find the right textiles.

February first and August first are my fabric designing targets, as well as Spring and Autumn International Quilt Market preparations. My schedule for workshops, near and far, is spread throughout the year and creates many more bookmarks to measure my time. And all the spaces between are devoted to making as many fine art quilts as I possibly can! Solitary time in the studio and social time visiting with students and quilting friends on the road. So this site is for sharing the outcome of this life in textiles and design.

There are probably an infinite number of repeat types…you could argue there are triangle repeats and hexagon repeats (like diamond/ogee repeats) and many others. Essentially, however, all repeats are iterations of the brick, block or drop repeats. That said, some designers specialize in an end product when they're designing fabric or textiles.

Perhaps you are designing fabric for bedding or throw pillows. Or maybe your goal is to design fabric for a Nursery or kid’s room. Could it be a baby blanket or linens in the crib Try to picture the whole scene and see if it makes sense visually.
